Portree is
located on the east coast of Skye only 40 miles from either the
Skye Bridge or Mallaig-Armadale
Ferry. It is known as the 'Capital of Skye' and as such is
home to a variety of museums, gallery's, restaurants, and tourist
attractions as well as a good selection of shops and supermarkets.
Portree also provides an excellent base from which to explore
the Misty Isle.
To the north
of Portree is the Trotternish region home to the Old Man of Storr
and and primordial-looking Quirang rock structures. From the regions
main village of Uig, the ferry will take you to Harris and Lewis
of the Outer Hebrides.
North West
of Portree is Waternish and Glendale home to spectacular sea cliffs,
seabirds, white sands and views to the outer Isles. The area is
also the ancestral seat of the Clan Macleod at the spectacular
Dunvegan Castle and museum.
For those
who enjoy the great outdoors south from Portree are the Cuillin
ranges. The Black Cuillin providing the greater challenge being
arguably the UK's most difficult mountain range. The Red Cuillins
although not as challenging are by no means less enjoyable with
many walks and paths winding over the tops and through the spectacular
glens. For some of the best views on Skye of the Cuillin be sure
to visit Elgol, Tarskavaig, Sligachan and Carbost.
Further south
of the Cuillin is the area of Skye known as the 'Garden of Skye'
home to a wide variety of plants and trees as well as Armadale
Castle Gardens and the Museum of the Isles- home to the Clan MacDonald.
